Things to do nearby include visiting the beautiful
Hunter Valley vineyard region, surrounding golf
courses and restaurants and the newly established
Hunter Valley Gardens, the largest privately
owned gardens in Australia. Tours are available
from the Kurri Motor Inn.
Maitland area attractions include the historic
Maitland Gaol and Walka Water Works, the National
trust properties of Tomago House and Grossman
House museum, the Tocal Agriculture Centre
and associated heritage homestead and farm
as well as many antique shops and the Maitland
City Art Gallery.
The old river port of Morpeth, which was
founded in 1821 is now home to many cafes,
galleries and craft stores and a town walk
amongst the heritage listed sandstone buildings
is a must for the visitor.
Adventure tourism is steadily growing in
the area and hot air ballooning, aerobatics,
horse and trail riding, bicycle hire, 4WD
tours, canoeing, and scenic helicopter tours
are all available for that special experience.
Enjoy an evening at Buttai Barn and kick
your heels up to a live bush band or try their
Colonial lunch or one of their special theme
nights.
Visit the historic Buchanan Gallery which
was constructed in 1887 as the Buchanan Public
School and served the community for 80 years.
Set in two acres of grounds with picnic facilities,
the teacher’s residence and school have been
restored as a centre for craft work.
The proximity to the area of the Watagan
State Forest( including sections of the Great
North Walk) and Barrington Tops National Park
provide ample opportunities for the more energetic
to enjoy bush walking and mountain biking.
Less than one hour away is the Blue Water
Wonderland of Port Stephens where you can
enjoy the sun and take a dolphin or whale
watching cruise. On the way pay a visit to
the Fighter World museum at the Williamtown
RAAF base or Oakvale Farm and Fauna World
at Salt Ash.
